Karen's Blog

Backyard Bear‘s creator is  Mary Ann, and Mary Ann is a Muskokan local and also a team mate (OhCanadaTeam and Team Muskoka) on etsy. This lady comes from Bracebridge, Ont.

Mary Ann works with reclaimed and recycled items. Almost all items that she sells are made with reclaimed materials to be a green as possible. Reuse, Recycle, Renew is her motto.Mary Ann finds other items during her walks and in second hand stores (a favourite place of mine.)

Mary Ann is also a painter of wildlife.  You can find out more about Mary Ann and the Backyard Bear at  thebackyardbear.com

Backyard Bear is not the only shop Mary Ann runs, check out http://www.oldmavisvintage.etsy.com

A couple of other shops from etsy and team mates (Team Muskoka) to visit who love to recycle -

The WOOly Owl and Alissa Tarita-Havenaar from Bracebridge, Muskoka, Ontario reclaims natural wool fibers and sews exclusively with lovely reclaimed cotton knits, providing Canadian upcycled wOOl alternatives for cOnscientiOus families.

Alissa’s wool diaper doublers check out her etsy listing.

Anne Hopkins – Gravenhurst, Muskoka, Ontario and her shop

She calls herself the Queen of Recycling and her designs are just amazing. She says  ” I am one Crazy little Clothing Designer.. with a very Bohemian Flare.” and her designs for kids and adults are definitely worth a look.

About Karen

I work with rope in the heart of Muskoka where I live with my wooden boat builder. All my pieces are one of a kind, that is what makes rope so wonderful. I love working with rope, a passion I brought over to Canada from the beautiful shores of Cornwall, England. As a sailor myself, I have adapted the designs (centuries old) to make 'one off' beautiful and nautical pieces ready to grace your homes.
